Battle Reports

My friend and I got to play an actual game of 40k today and finished it. It wasn't perfectly balanced but time was an issue. He didn't have time to prepare a pointed list so we just winged it. He was playing IG and I had my Marines. He brought 3 scout sentinels, 2 armored sentinels, his HQ squad, 3 heavy weapons platforms, and a couple guardsman squads. I deployed 2 tactical squads, a captain, vindicator, and assault terminators with TH and SS. We figured around 800 pts each. Were still new to the game so we play to have as much fun and equality as we can.

This was our second game of these 2 armies. The first one was played with no terrain, and I had to walk across the whole table marching right into his firepower. Needless to say, I had lost by turn 3.

This time we played on a smaller table with a bunch of terrain. It made the game way more fun, and turned out completely differently. I deployed one tactical squad in a large piece of terrain, and the other out in the open. I put the vindicator in the back and just left it there. My terminators were deployed along the table edge behind some terrain with the Captain as part of that unit.

My friend deployed his armored sentinels across from my vindicator with a bunch of terrain between them, 2 Cadian guardsman squads across from my tactical squads (also with a bunch of terrain between them), his HQ and scout sentinels were across from my terminators. And I think the biggest mistake of his deployment was putting his heavy weapon platforms up in front even though they were in terrain.

He opted to go second, so I decided to hit those heavy weapons with everything that I had. It took most of my army but they all went down right then. The vindicator missed its mark and the assault terminators spent their turn walking across difficult terrain. End of my turn.

The IG moved his whole army closer pretty much exactly where it was. Then he shot one squad of lasguns at my terminators. Like I was worried. I rolled 2 ones, of course. That was about all he did the first turn, there may have been a casualty from a tactical squad but no biggy.

After I was able to get my assault terminators in assault with a guard squad, HQ squad, and his sentinels it was all bad news for him. My terminators killed all his guardsmen that were in assault range, because he forgot to take a moral check and kept them in combat for 2 turns. If we would have remembered to do that he may have gotten away for a little while at least. The terminators could only glance on a 6, and they never did anything to his walkers, they just locked up there the whole game. His sentinel took out my vindicator with its autocannon, but not before I was able to destroy one of them with my demolisher cannon.

The rest of the game we pretty much my tactical squads slowly chewing through his guardsman, while only taking 4 casualties. Overall it was fun, and we got through 6 turns in 2 and a half hours. That's a huge improvement over our normal 1 hour per turn rate. The more we play the more we memorize and it really streamlines the game.

I felt like I had way too much on the field this time though. If he would have deployed his heavy weapons better they could have done a lot of damage so I don't know if it was just a game changing mistake on his part, or the fact that I had an unfair amount of units. We will play as much as we can and figure out what is balanced and what is not. No close games yet, but were still having fun, and that's what the game is about.
